Day tours & stopover ideas

One day in Beijing: the Wall, the palace, or the hutongs

Two airports, more than 90 international cities, and three day trips worth planning a stopover around.

The short version

Beijing is the easiest city in China to reach: Capital (PEK) and Daxing (PKX) run daily international flights from London, Los Angeles, Sydney, Dubai and Singapore, so you can land in the morning and be on the Great Wall the next day. One day is enough for exactly one imperial set piece — Mutianyu, the Forbidden City, or the hutongs behind the Drum Tower, with Peking duck to finish.

Why take a day tour from Beijing

Beijing is built for the day trip. The imperial set pieces sit inside the 2nd Ring Road, the Great Wall starts 70 km north, and both airports connect to the metro — so a traveller with one free day can genuinely see something rather than commute to it.

The catch is scale. The Forbidden City alone holds 980 buildings, and Mutianyu is a 1h 40m drive each way. The day trips that work pick one theme and go deep — a stretch of wall, a palace, a neighbourhood — instead of ticking three boxes badly.

That is also why we run them privately. A guide who knows the Meridian Gate queue, which Mutianyu watchtower empties first, and when the Temple of Heaven fills with tai chi practitioners turns eight hours into something unhurried.

  • Mutianyu over Badaling: 23 watchtowers, a cable car up, a toboggan down, and a fraction of the crowds.
  • Forbidden City tickets are released around 7 days ahead and sell out — we pre-book against your passport number.
  • A hutong day means food you would not order alone: donkey burgers, boiled mutton, courtyard-house lunch.
  • The 240-hour visa-free transit rule covers Beijing, so eligible passports with an onward ticket need no visa.
  • Winter is cold but empty — January at Mutianyu is genuinely quiet, and the palace courtyards photograph well.

Getting there and away

Both airports sit on the metro — PEK on the Airport Express, PKX on the Daxing line — around 45 minutes to the centre.

High-speed trains from Shanghai and Xi'an arrive at Beijing South and Beijing West in 4h 30m, useful if Beijing is one stop on a longer trip.

Your guide meets you in the hotel lobby for every day tour. Airport pickup is quoted separately and priced as a transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a Beijing day tour during a layover?

Yes, if you have at least nine hours on the ground and qualify for the 240-hour visa-free transit. We build the day around your actual landing time: Mutianyu if you land before 08:00, the Forbidden City and hutongs if later, and we return you to the airport three hours before departure.

Which section of the Great Wall is best for one day?

Mutianyu. It is restored, has a cable car and a toboggan, and thins out after 15:00. Jinshanling is better walking but adds 40 minutes each way; Badaling is closest and by far the busiest.

Is one day enough for the Forbidden City?

Comfortably — most people need three to four hours. We enter at the Meridian Gate, walk the central axis, then exit north into Jingshan Park for the view back across the rooftops.

Are entrance fees included?

On every tour we sell, yes. The quoted price covers each listed ticket, the private vehicle, the guide, and lunch where stated. Shopping stops are not part of any itinerary.

What should I wear?

Layers and shoes with grip. The Wall involves staircases at a 40-degree gradient, and a Beijing winter drops well below freezing. Summer is hot and humid; your guide keeps water in the vehicle.
