Border city & coast day tours

One day in Shenzhen: cross to Hong Kong, or stay for the coast

A city of 40 years that shares a border with Hong Kong and a coastline with the South China Sea.

The short version

Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX) runs daily international flights to Singapore, Bangkok, Dubai and beyond, and the city shares a land border with Hong Kong — 15 minutes to a different legal system, currency and food culture. One day in Guangdong's youngest city buys either that crossing, the art villages of Dafen, or the walled coast at Dapeng.

Why take a day tour from Shenzhen

Shenzhen is the only major city in China you can reasonably describe as new. In 1980 it was a market town of 30,000 people on the Guangdong side of the Hong Kong border; today it has more residents than London and a skyline built almost entirely after 2000.

That history makes it a strange and useful base. You are 15 minutes from Hong Kong, an hour from Guangzhou, and half an hour from a coastline of walled villages and empty beaches that most visitors never reach.

For a day trip, decide what you actually want: a second country, an art district, or salt air. All three are real options from the same hotel bed.

  • Hong Kong from Shenzhen is the cheapest way to add a second destination to a China trip.
  • Dafen Oil Painting Village lets you watch painters work and commission a canvas the same afternoon.
  • Dapeng Fortress predates the city by 600 years — Ming walls, one street, and a bay of fishing boats.
  • Shenzhen's metro is clean, cheap and almost entirely built after 2004, which means step-free stations everywhere.
  • Guangdong's climate means the coast works even in December, when northern China is freezing.

Getting there and away

Bao'an (SZX) sits on metro Line 11, roughly 40 minutes from Futian, with daily international flights across Asia and the Gulf.

Hong Kong West Kowloon is 15 minutes by high-speed rail from Futian; the Guangzhou–Shenzhen corridor runs every few minutes.

Guides meet guests at the hotel. Border crossings are handled on foot — carry your passport and any required visa.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Hong Kong as a day trip from Shenzhen?

Yes, and it is the most popular thing we run here. Take the 08:00 train from Futian, clear immigration with your passport, and you have eight hours in Kowloon and Central. Most nationalities need no visa for Hong Kong; you do need a valid Chinese visa to return if your entry was single-entry.

What is there to do in Shenzhen itself?

More than people expect. Dafen's painting workshops, the OCT contemporary art district, Dapeng Fortress on the coast, and a 128 km coastline with a public beach at Dameisha.

Do I need a Hong Kong visa?

Most Western passport holders get 90 days visa-free in Hong Kong, but check your nationality. Critically, if your China visa is single-entry, you must plan the crossing so you still have a valid entry to return.

Is Shenzhen worth more than a transit stop?

For business travellers with a spare day, yes — the border crossing alone justifies it. For a holiday, two nights lets you do Hong Kong properly and still see the coast.

How far is the beach?

Dameisha is about 40 minutes from downtown by metro. Dapeng and Xichong, on the peninsula, are 1h 30m and considerably better — cleaner water, fewer people.
