Hangzhou · Zhejiang
Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province and home to West Lake, Longjing tea villages and the Grand Canal. One hour from Shanghai by high-speed rail. Private Hangzhou tours from US$189 a day.
The short version
The place itself
Marco Polo called Hangzhou the finest city in the world, and Kublai Khan's customs records suggest he was not exaggerating. At the end of the Southern Song dynasty this was a capital of more than a million people, with paved roads, a fire service and restaurants serving regional cuisines.
Modern Hangzhou kept the asset that mattered. West Lake was never built over. Its causeways, islands and hilltop pagodas still frame the same view that Song painters composed, and the surrounding hills of Zhejiang produce Longjing tea, China's most prized green.
For visitors the arithmetic is simple: one fast train hour from Shanghai, forty minutes to Xiaoshan airport on the metro, and enough good hotels that two or three nights is a comfortable base rather than a rush.
Pins are plotted from real latitude and longitude on a 5° graticule. This is a schematic orientation diagram, not a political map — no boundaries are drawn.
Walk the Su Causeway at dawn before the crowds, then take a boat to the island of the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon — the scene on the back of the ¥1 note.
Terraced tea bushes thirty minutes uphill from the lake, where families still pan-fire Longjing by hand and pour it for visitors.
A 1,700-year-old monastery at the foot of Feilai Peak, with grotto carvings cut into the cliff behind it.
A rebuilt Song-dynasty street of apothecaries, teahouses and dumpling stalls running up to the Drum Tower.
The southern terminus of China's 1,800 km imperial waterway — take the public ferry along it for ¥3.
Zhang Yimou's open-air show staged on the lake itself, with lights choreographed across the water.
The three great capitals plus a morning with the pandas of Chengdu — the trip we recommend to seven out of ten first-time visitors.

Two days is right. Day one around West Lake — causeways, boat trip, Lingyin Temple. Day two for the Longjing tea hills, the Grand Canal and Hefang Street. One day works as a Shanghai day trip if you leave early and accept skipping the temples.

Chen Jing spent seven years in corporate hospitality before she sat the guide exam, and it shows: she runs Shanghai as a schedule rather than a sightseeing list. She can move a family through the Bund, the Shanghai Museum and a 1930s apartment block before lunch without anyone feeling hurried. Shanghainese is her home language, and she will happily translate what the aunties at the market are really saying about you.
Eleven factory visits in four days, and she still found us a table at 9pm on a Friday. Quite extraordinary.

Huang Zhiqiang has picked spring tea in the hills west of West Lake for eighteen years and still buys his own leaves from two grower families he has known since 2007. He plans a Hangzhou day in cups of tea rather than in sights. He is also our most experienced guide by a wide margin: more than 300 itineraries run, and he has never once arrived late.
Eighteen years of tea and he still talks about it like the harvest was yesterday. Our best day in China.

Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province, on China's east coast south of Shanghai. Zhejiang is also the tea-growing and silk heartland, and the source of the Longjing green tea grown in the hills west of West Lake.
Yes. The fastest trains take 45 minutes door to platform and Hangzhou East is on the metro. Book the 07:00 departure and you are at West Lake before 09:00, with the whole day ahead of you.
Two days is comfortable: West Lake and temples on day one, tea hills and the Grand Canal on day two. A single day works but means choosing between the lake and everything else.
West Lake, Longjing tea, silk, and being the Southern Song capital. Modern Hangzhou is also where Alibaba was founded, which explains the tech money and the restaurant scene.
