Chengdu Travel Guide 2026 | Pandas, Sichuan | JoyoTour

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province and the easiest city in China to like: giant panda cubs, a teahouse culture that has never hurried, and Sichuan pepper that numbs before it burns. Private Chengdu tours from US$189 a day.

The short version

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province and the gateway to the panda reserves, the Leshan Giant Buddha and Jiuzhaigou. In the city itself the Chengdu Research Base opens at 07:30, which is when the pandas actually feed, and the rest of the day runs on teahouses, hotpot and a humid subtropical pace. Three days is comfortable; two still works if pandas and food are the whole point.

The place itself

What Chengdu is actually like

Chengdu has been rich for 2,300 years, ever since the Dujiangyan irrigation system was cut into the Min River in 256 BC and turned the plain into the most productive farmland in the west. The consequence is a city with nothing to prove: it never had to industrialise desperately, and it kept the teahouses.

Sichuan cooking came out of the same conditions — a damp basin, short winters, a need to sweat. Sichuan pepper is not heat, it is a citrus-floral numbness, and it is used with chilli rather than instead of it. Your first hotpot will be a physical experience before it is a culinary one.

For most visitors Chengdu is a base rather than a destination. Pandas in the morning, Leshan or Mount Emei as a day trip, and then the question of whether to fly north to Jiuzhaigou or head west onto the Tibetan plateau.

Getting there and away

Chengdu Tianfu International (TFU) opened in 2021 and now carries most long-haul traffic; Shuangliu (CTU) keeps the dense domestic schedule. Both have metro connections.

High-speed rail reaches Chengdu East from Xi'an in about 3 hours and from Beijing in 7, and puts Leshan 1 hour away for the Giant Buddha.

Jiuzhaigou is a 1-hour flight from Chengdu, or roughly 8 hours by road through the mountains. We usually recommend flying one way and driving the other.

Wang Fang trained as a chef before she became a guide, and it shows when she reads a menu in thirty seconds and orders the dish the kitchen is actually proud of. Her Chengdu mornings start at a market by 07:00 and end at a hotpot table she booked three days earlier. She is also firm about chilli tolerance: she asks once, remembers, and never lets a guest sit through a dish they cannot finish.

She ordered for us for nine days and not one dish was wrong, including the one my son would eat.

Lin Xiaoyu studied wildlife biology and spent a year as a keeper assistant before she started guiding, so she talks about pandas as animals rather than mascots, including what twelve hours of bamboo does to a digestive system. She runs volunteer days with the timing of someone who has cleaned enclosures at 06:00. Children adore her, largely because her supply of panda facts survives a four-hour car ride.

Our daughter asked forty questions and Lin Xiaoyu answered every one. We learned more in four hours than a week.

Frequently asked questions

What province is Chengdu in?

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province in south-western China. Sichuan is the panda province, the home of Sichuan pepper and the Sichuanese dialect, and the launching point for trips to Jiuzhaigou, Leshan, Mount Emei and the Tibetan plateau.

What time should I arrive at the panda base?

At opening, 07:30. Giant pandas are crepuscular: they feed and move in the cool early morning and sleep through the middle of the day. By 10:30 in summer most of the enclosure is a pile of sleeping bamboo-eaters.

Can I volunteer with the pandas?

Yes, at the Dujiangyan base about 1.5 hours from Chengdu. A full-day programme covers cleaning enclosures, preparing bamboo and observing feeding, with a certificate at the end. It must be booked weeks ahead and has a minimum age of 12.

Is Sichuan food very spicy?

It is numbing more than spicy. Sichuan pepper produces a tingling citrus sensation and is usually paired with chilli rather than replacing it. Tell your guide your tolerance and we will order accordingly — plenty of Sichuan dishes are mild.

How many days do you need in Chengdu?

Three. One for the panda base and People's Park, one for Leshan and Mount Emei, one for Dujiangyan or the volunteer programme. Add two for Jiuzhaigou, and more if you are heading into Tibet.
