The place itself

What Mount Emei is actually like

Mount Emei is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains of China and the bodhimanda of Samantabhadra, and it has been drawing pilgrims for more than a thousand years. It rises from 420 m at the foot of the plain to 3,099 m at Wanfo Summit, a vertical drop that stacks four climate zones onto one mountain — subtropical forest at the base, alpine fir and azalea at the top, and a permanent fog belt in between. Around 3,000 plant species grow here, including rare trees found nowhere else, and 26 temples are scattered along the trails.

The mountain is split into three tourist zones by altitude. The low zone around Baoguo Temple is where you sleep, eat and soak in a hot spring; the mid-mountain zone from Qingyin Pavilion to Xiangchi holds the scenery everyone photographs — double-eaved pavilions over black and white streams, narrow gorges, and the monkey reserve; and the high zone from Xiangchi to the Golden Summit is the pilgrimage core, where the four great spectacles (sunrise, sea of clouds, Buddha's halo and holy lamps) appear.

In 1996 Mount Emei and the Leshan Giant Buddha were jointly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as a mixed natural and cultural site. Most travellers come up from Chengdu, 120 km away on expressway, and pair the mountain with Leshan's Giant Buddha on the way. It is the kind of place that rewards slow walking and punishes tight schedules — the summit is not the point, the climb is.

What not to miss — Mount Emei

01

Golden Summit and the 48 m Samantabhadra

At 3,077 m the summit is a small plateau crowned by Huazang Temple and the 48 m bronze statue of Samantabhadra with ten faces pointing in four directions. On a clear morning you can see the Chengdu plain, the Min, Qingyi and Dadu rivers, and the snow peaks of Gongga and Wawu.

02

The four spectacles: sunrise, sea of clouds, Buddha's halo and holy lamps

Sunrise fires around 06:00 in summer and 07:00 in winter; the sea of clouds is best 09:00–10:00 and 15:00–16:00; Buddha's halo (a rainbow ring around your own shadow, cast on fog below) appears around 70 times a year, most often 09:00–10:00 and 14:00–16:00.

03

The ecological monkey reserve

Between Qingyin Pavilion, Yixiantian and Hongchunping, a 25-hectare valley shelters three family troops of wild Tibetan macaques — 300-plus animals that have zero fear of people. Buy a bamboo staff (CNY 1 for plain, CNY 3 for lacquered) before you enter, and never open a bag in front of them.

04

Qingyin Pavilion and the Double-Bridge Clear Sound

A garden temple built over the meeting point of the Black and White Dragon streams, with two stone arch bridges flying over the water and a black boulder shaped like an ox heart between them. Landscape architects call it a sounding poem and a three-dimensional painting.

05

Wannian Temple and its beamless brick hall

A key temple at 1,020 m, famous for a Northern Song bronze statue of Samantabhadra on a white elephant and a Ming brick hall built in 1600 without a single beam or column — a domed structure in the shape of heaven-and-earth, ringed by 10,000 small Buddhas.

06

Baoguo Temple and the hot springs at the base

Baoguo is the gateway temple, the largest on the mountain, holding a 2.4 m Ming porcelain Buddha, a 25-tonne bronze bell and a 14-storey Huayan bronze pagoda cast with 4,700 Buddhas. Three hot springs — Lingxiu, Hongzhu and Yujia — sit within walking distance for after the climb.

Getting there and away

Most travellers fly into Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) and take a long-distance bus or the high-speed train. From Chengdu Xinnanmen Bus Station, buses run every 30 minutes to Emeishan Passenger Transport Centre (CNY 43, about 2 hours). The high-speed train from Chengdu East to Emeishan station takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. There is also a direct bus from Chongqing Caiyuanba (CNY 126) and frequent buses from Leshan (CNY 8–12, every 10 minutes). Emeishan railway station sits on the Chengdu–Kunming line with more than 20 trains stopping daily, including services to Kunming and Panzhihua. Note that Emeishan has two bus stations: the Jiuzhu station is in the city, while the tourist transport centre is inside the scenic area at Baoguo Temple — taxis from the city station take about 10 minutes but can only reach the Yingbin Square at the park gate.

Inside the scenic area, the green sightseeing bus connects five car parks: Baoguo Temple (walk to Baoguo, the First Mountain Pavilion, the museum and the cliff carvings), Wuxiangang (walk to Qingyin Pavilion, Yixiantian and the monkey reserve), Wannian Temple (cable car or walk to Wannian Temple, then up to Xixinsuo or down to Bailong Cave), Linggongli, and Leidongping (the trailhead for Jieyin Hall and the Golden Summit). Tickets are single-use per stop. From Leidongping, walk 1.5 km to Jieyin Hall and either ride the Golden Summit cable car or climb the remaining 6 km on foot through fir forest in about 1 hour. Sedan chairs (huagan) are available on steep sections — Xiangchi to Leidongping, 7.5 km, costs CNY 240 uphill and CNY 180 downhill, negotiable. City buses 1 and 5 connect the railway station, downtown and Baoguo Temple for CNY 1–1.5.

How many days do you need?

Three days is the honest number, and the mountain's own guidebook says so — one day each for the low, mid and high zones. A packed day trip from Chengdu is possible (bus to Leidongping, cable car to the summit, cable car down to Wannian Temple, walk to Qingyin Pavilion and the monkey reserve, out via Wuxiangang) but you will spend six hours in transit and see the mountain through a bus window. Two days gets you the low zone and mid zone properly plus a hot spring. A third day buys the classic 40 km walk from Qingyin Pavilion up through Hongchunping, Xianfeng Temple and the Nine Elders Cave to Xiangchi and Leidongping — the route UNESCO experts surveyed — and a night on the summit for sunrise without a 04:00 alarm.

Plan these days properly

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Mount Emei?

April to June and September to November. Spring brings the azalea bloom — best at Leidongping in April and May and on Wanfo Summit in May and June — while autumn delivers the clearest skies for sunrise and the sea of clouds. Winter (November to February) is cold but often sunny on the summit, which is actually prime season for the four spectacles; summer is wet, with rain most afternoons on the upper mountain.

Is Mount Emei worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you want the four spectacles. November to February often brings clear skies on the summit when summer is clouded over, and the Leidongping ski field runs from December to late March, roughly 130 days. The catch is cold — the top is about 10°C colder than the base and can drop to -15°C — and the road may stop at Linggongli instead of Leidongping in snow. Coats can be rented at the summit and at Leidongping.

Are the monkeys on Mount Emei dangerous?

They can scratch or bite if provoked. The reserve holds over 300 wild Tibetan macaques that have lost all fear of people, and the standard tourist mistake is holding a plastic bag, a drink or food in the open. Keep a safe distance, do not scream or run if a troop blocks the path, never touch or feed them directly, and buy a bamboo staff before entering — CNY 1 for plain, CNY 3 for lacquered — which doubles as a walking pole.

Can I visit Mount Emei as a day trip from Chengdu?

Yes, but it is a long day. Take the 07:00 bus from Chengdu Xinnanmen to Emeishan tourist transport centre (about 2 hours), ride the sightseeing bus to Leidongping, cable car to the Golden Summit, cable car down to Wannian Temple, walk to Qingyin Pavilion and the monkey reserve, and exit via Wuxiangang for the return bus. You will be moving the whole time and will miss sunrise and the sea of clouds. Two days is far better.

How much does it cost to visit Mount Emei?

Budget around CNY 500–700 per person for two days excluding accommodation. Entry is CNY 150 in peak season or CNY 90 in low season, the full-mountain sightseeing bus pass is CNY 70, the Golden Summit cable car is CNY 65 up and CNY 55 down, and Wannian Temple cable car is CNY 65 up and CNY 45 down. Add CNY 10 for Wannian Temple, CNY 8 for Baoguo Temple and CNY 6 for Fuhu Temple. A hot spring soak at Lingxiu is CNY 168.

Do I need to book the Golden Summit hotels in advance?

Yes, especially for weekends, Chinese public holidays and the October golden week. Summit accommodation is limited — the Emeishan Jinding Villa sits at 3,033 m and starts around CNY 443 for a standard room — and the only way to catch sunrise without a 04:00 start is to sleep up there or at Leidongping. Book at least two weeks ahead in peak season.
