Xixi Wetland Tours & Private Tour Packages 2026 | Sculled Boats, Deep Pool Mouth, Autumn Reeds | JoyoTour

Xixi is a 10.08 sq km wetland inside Hangzhou city — the first national wetland park in China to combine urban, farming and cultural wetland, with ¥80 entry, a ¥1 bowl of tea and boat channels too narrow for anything else.

The short version

Xixi Wetland is a 10.08 sq km stretch of urban wetland in western Hangzhou, Zhejiang — the first park in China to hold city, farming and cultural wetland all in one place, and less than 5 km from West Lake. One ¥80 ticket (¥60–65 if you book online first) opens it, a bowl of Xixi tea at Hezhu Street is ¥1, and the best way through it is a sculled boat: about 1.5 hours by water or three to four hours on foot. One day is enough.

The place itself

What Xixi Wetland is actually like

Xixi is what happens when a city grows around a marsh and then decides to keep it. Ten square kilometres of channels, fish ponds, reed beds and persimmon trees sit inside Hangzhou's western districts, less than five kilometres from West Lake, and the water grid is old enough that the Song court put a town here in 988. It is the first national wetland park in the country to hold urban wetland, farming wetland and cultural wetland in one boundary.

Three words describe it locally — cold, wild, thin, elegant — meaning spare rather than showy. What you actually see is water: broad channels that narrow into ditches too tight for anything but a sculled boat, dykes planted with mulberry and bishop's-wood, reeds that turn white in autumn, and stone slab bridges so low and flat that a farmer with a carrying pole could cross without climbing.

It is a place people visit in one of two ways, and the difference matters. By boat you get the sense of the thing: the boatman points out which boat Ge You sat in and which Shu Qi and Alex Fong took, and you slide through channels where the reeds close overhead. On foot you get the stone paths, the old cottages and the gardens — Meizhu Villa, Xixi Thatched Hall, Gao's Manor — and you can spend an hour on a bench with a ¥1 bowl of tea.

The two combined are the answer, which is why the park's own suggested routes mix them. Give it a day, start at opening, and do not treat it as a checklist: the marsh is the sight, and the people who enjoy it most are the ones who stop counting the named spots.

What not to miss — Xixi Wetland

01

The sculled-boat channels

The reason to come. From Zhoujia pier a boatman sculls you up the inner channels past Meizhu Villa, Xixi Plum Villa, Xixi Waterside Pavilion and Qiuxue Nunnery — about an hour and a half, through water so narrow the reeds brush the gunwales. Nothing else in Hangzhou feels like this.

02

Qiuxue Nunnery and the reeds

First built in the Song as Dasheng Nunnery, retitled in the late Ming from the line 'autumn snow veils the fishing boat', and rebuilt 1919–21 by the Nanxun scholar Zhou Qingyun. It stands on an island in the middle of the wetland, reachable only by small boat, and it is the best place on the water to watch the reeds — in autumn an unbroken white. Wild duck burst out of the reeds and cut across the channel as you approach.

03

Gao's Manor

Also called Xixi Villa, built between 1657 and 1664 for Gao Shiqi, the scholar who went from selling calligraphy in a temple market to the Hanlin Academy after the Kangxi emperor noticed his handwriting. Kangxi visited by boat in 1689, wrote the two characters 'bamboo window' for him and a poem about the place. It is the most complete of the wetland's old estates.

04

Deep Pool Mouth and the dragon-boat gathering

Also called Deep Pool Harbour, walled by broken banks and reachable only by boat — the old gazetteer says it cannot be crossed without one, and that a dragon lives in the unfathomable depths. Three enormous old camphor trees stand on the quiet bank. At Dragon Boat Festival the whole of Jiangcun turns out for the dragon-boat gathering, a name said to have been granted by the Qianlong emperor; the race is judged on skill, not speed.

05

Hezhu Street and the ¥1 bowl of tea

The commercial street, and the place to buy Xixi's small flower baskets, blue calico, rice wine and rice cakes. The tea houses pour the local Xixi tea — rated locally at ten times Longjing — into white bowls, ¥1 a bowl, sweet and full-bodied. Buy a strip of malt sugar and pull it while you walk.

06

The wetland botanic garden and the birdwatching platform

About 55 hectares of open ground beside the water with more than 600 plant species, benches on the bank and, at Xialongtan, the largest natural protection zone in the park — where staff have built a birdwatching platform so you can watch the flocks go up at once. It comes free with the ticket and is the best value in the park for children.

Getting there and away

There is no airport or station at Xixi itself — it sits inside Hangzhou, so everything funnels through the city. Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) is about an hour from the centre; the airport bus costs ¥20, with departures to the city every 30 minutes from 07:30–09:30, every 15 minutes from 09:30–17:00 and every 20 minutes from 17:00–21:00, stopping at Chengzhan railway station, the Grand Metro Park Hotel and the Wulinmen ticket office. By rail, Hangzhou's main station is Chengzhan, almost all trains stop there, and Hangzhou South in Xiaoshan takes the rest; from the railway station there is a free shuttle to the relevant long-distance coach station. Drivers should know the city's restrictions: on weekdays the scenic area restricts by number plate during the morning and evening peaks (07:00–08:30 and 17:00–18:30), and at spring and autumn weekends odd and even plates alternate between days, 08:30–17:00.

Inside Hangzhou, buses run ¥1–4 — K-prefixed services are usually ¥2 and B-prefixed rapid buses ¥3–4, with most fares halved in March, April, October and November — and the network is almost entirely exact-change, no change given. Hangzhou metro line 1 opened in November 2012, ¥2 to ¥8 a ride. The park itself has more than one gate; the classic boat route starts from the Wen'er West Road entrance, and entering from Zijin'gang Road simply means running the route backwards. Taxis flag at ¥11 for 3 km, then ¥2.5 a kilometre, and public bikes are available from a point roughly every 300 m at ¥300 a card, with the first hour free. Boat and gate tickets stop selling an hour before the park closes.

How many days do you need?

One full day, and not two. The park is ten square kilometres but the routes are loops: the water route runs about 1.5 hours and the land route three to four, so a combined day gets you both and leaves the afternoon free. What an extra day buys is the rest of Hangzhou rather than Xixi again — West Lake, Lingyin, Longjing village — which is why the source guide pairs Xixi with Hangzhou's other sights rather than extending it. Start at opening, because the park fills up by mid-morning and the best light on the reeds is early.

Plan these days properly

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Xixi Wetland?

Spring and autumn, and specifically autumn if you have to choose one. Hangzhou is hot in summer and damp and cold in winter, so the shoulder seasons are kinder. From March the flower festival starts and the park turns green; autumn brings clear air, osmanthus, and the two things Xixi is famous for — white reeds at Qiuxue Nunnery and red persimmons on the dykes.

How do I buy Xixi tickets more cheaply?

Book online before you go. At the ticket office the price is ¥80, flat. Booked in advance online it runs ¥15–20 cheaper, and you collect at the ticket office, which also skips the queue. There is no other discount worth chasing — the Hangzhou resident card deal applies to Qiandao Lake's southeast zone, not to Xixi.

Should I see Xixi by boat or on foot?

Both, water first. The channels are the point of the place and a sculled boat from Zhoujia pier takes about 1.5 hours through water no path reaches. Then get out at Qiuxue Nunnery and walk the land route — the flat three-holed stone slab bridges, the stone paths and the old cottages — which takes three to four hours if you stop, and you will.

How long does it take to walk around Xixi?

By boat about an hour and a half; on foot three to four hours, longer if you linger, which the source guide assumes you will. The two suggested land routes both start and finish at Zhoujia village so you never end up stranded at a gate you do not recognise.

Is food expensive inside Xixi Wetland?

Restaurants inside run ¥50–100 a head and are Hangzhou cooking, so the guide's honest advice is to bring supplies and picnic in the flower beds — buy at a supermarket on the way and spread a cloth under the trees. No scenic-area restaurant anywhere is cheap, but the ones at Xixi are not outrageous either, and eating with the water in front of you is worth something.

Should I stay overnight inside Xixi Wetland?

No. The lodgings inside are expensive, and there is no reason to pay for it — Xixi is close to central Hangzhou, well served by bus and metro, and a day is all the park needs. Stay anywhere with good transport, leave early, and be at the gate at opening; hostel beds in the old town start around ¥45.
