The short version

The Shunan Bamboo Sea is a 120 sq km forest of bamboo in southern Sichuan's Yibin, holding 58 bamboo species across more than 70,000 mu of hills — the largest original bamboo park in China. Two days is right: one for the Jade Corridor, the cable car and the cave temples, one for rafts, springs and a full-bamboo banquet. It is about 4 hours by road from Chengdu and 1 hour from Yibin.

What Shunan Bamboo Sea is actually like

The Shunan Bamboo Sea — literally 'the bamboo sea of southern Sichuan' — is exactly what the name promises: some 70,000 mu of nann bamboo pouring over 28 hills and 500 smaller rises in Yibin's far south, so dense and so green that from a lookout it moves like water. This is the largest original bamboo park in China, holding 58 species, and its plant cover runs to 87%, which is why people also call it a natural oxygen bar.

The park is built around a handful of set pieces. The Jade Corridor is the signature: a stretch of road paved in red sandstone that local stone, and canopied so tightly by leaning bamboo that it feels like a tunnel. The Guanyun or 'sea-view' tower, reached by one of China's longest cable cars, gives the sweep over the whole green ocean. And in the cliffs, the Xianyu Cave temple and the Tianbao Stockade hold Ming-dynasty carvings and a Qing-era fortress gate respectively.

Between the set pieces, the park is a place for slow, damp, green idling: drifting a bamboo raft across a lake, walking the Wnagyou Valley by moonlight, listening to the water in the Qicai Falls gorge, and cooling off in air that stays near 15.5°C year-round. It is not dramatic mountain scenery; it is soft and enveloping, and that is the point.

The food is part of the draw, and the park is the one place to eat it: the full-bamboo banquet that runs from fresh winter and spring shoots to bamboo fungus, bamboo 'bird's nest' and preserved bamboo shoots. Add Yibin's own famous ranmian noodles and ye'erba, and this is as good a reason to come as the green.

What not to miss — Shunan Bamboo Sea

01

The Jade Corridor

The park's signature walk: a road paved in red sandstone, arched over by old and new bamboo leaning so far inward that the light comes through in slivers. Cool and half-lit even at noon, it is the single most photographed stretch of the whole bamboo sea.

02

The cable car and the viewing tower

One of China's longest cable cars, 2,742 m long with a 350 m rise, lifts you from the valley floor to the Guanyun or 'sea-view' tower, from which the whole rolling green ocean opens out. It runs via the heart of the park to the Jade Corridor area.

03

The Xianyu Cave temple

A temple carved into a natural rock cavity in a sheer cliff, reached by a single narrow path, with Ming-dynasty cliff carvings from 1506–1522 and reliefs of the Journey to the West tales. Inside: a reclining Buddha, Guanyin hall, and the old monks' hall that stored abbots' ashes.

04

The Tianbao Stockade

A Qing-dynasty fortress built in 1862 along a cliff to defend against the Taiping army, running about 1,500 m long, 20 m high and 10 m wide with thirteen stone gates. The red sandstone glows gold in sunlight; in mist it turns strange and theatrical.

05

Bamboo rafts on the lakes

The way to move on the water here: a small raft seats four for ¥80 and a covered large raft about eight for ¥220. The classic drift is across the 'sea within the sea' lake, where the bamboo closes in on every side and the whole point is to stop rowing for a while.

06

The Qicai waterfall and the Wangyou Valley

The Qicai ('seven-colour') Falls drop nearly 200 m in four tiers between two hills, throwing rainbows in sunlight. The Wangyou, or 'forget-your-worries', Valley is the park's quiet evening walk — water, bamboo and, on a clear night, moonlight.

Getting there and away

The gateway is Yibin, in Sichuan's far south. Yibin Wuliangye Airport (YBP) is the nearest, about 60 km from the park, and Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) is the other common entry, from which you reach the park by road. From Chengdu there is a direct bus from Xinnanmen station, leaving in the morning and taking about 4 hours for roughly ¥85–112. From Yibin, buses run from the southern station to Changning every 12 minutes (about ¥10, 1 hour), and from Changning to the park every 15 minutes (about 40 minutes).

Inside the park, distances are long and public transport is thin, so most visitors either self-drive or charter a car and driver for about ¥200–250 a day — the park itself will help arrange one. The cable car, electric carts and rafts cover the specific hops up the hills and across the water. Note the temperature: the park sits on high ground and the day-to-night swing is wide, so bring a thicker layer even in summer.

How many days do you need?

Two days is the standard and enough. Day one: enter by the west gate, take in Xianyu Cave and the Tianbao Stockade, cool off at Qinglong Lake, then eat a full-bamboo banquet. Day two: do the cable car up to the viewing tower, walk the Jade Corridor, and visit the Bamboo Museum before heading out — many travellers then add an hour to the old town of Lizhuang on the way back to Chengdu. One day covers the first half only, and the park's scattered layout means you spend most of it in the car.

Plan these days properly

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to the Shunan Bamboo Sea from Chengdu?

By road, about 4 to 4.5 hours for some 380 km. A direct bus leaves Chengdu's Xinnanmen station in the morning and takes about 4 hours for roughly ¥85–112. By car, take the expressway to Neijiang, then the Neiyi expressway to the Yibin south exit and the tourism road up to Changning county and the park — it is well signposted. From Yibin, buses go to the park via Changning in about 1 hour 40 minutes in total.

When is the best time to visit the Shunan Bamboo Sea?

All year, because the park stays green and cool whatever the season, with an average of about 15.5°C and humidity above 83%. Summer (July–August) is the classic time, when the bamboo gives shade and the air is cool while the rest of the Sichuan basin bakes. Autumn adds red leaves among the green, and winter is quiet with the occasional dusting of snow. July and August are also the busiest, so book beds ahead.

Is the Shunan Bamboo Sea worth visiting?

Yes, if you want green calm rather than big mountains. It is the largest original bamboo park in China — over 70,000 mu of bamboo across dozens of hills — and the Jade Corridor and the cable-car view are genuinely striking. It rewards people who like walking, eating and doing very little; if you need constant spectacle, two days will feel long. It pairs perfectly with Yibin's food and the old town of Lizhuang.

What is there to eat at the Shunan Bamboo Sea?

The full-bamboo banquet is the thing: fresh shoots in every season (winter and spring shoots, then summer bamboos), bamboo fungus braised with free-range chicken, the crisp 'bamboo fungus egg', bamboo bird's-nest and preserved shoots. Outside the park, try Yibin ranmian noodles — named for being so oil-rich they would light — and ye'erba, a steamed leaf-wrapped rice cake. The town of Shuanghe, near the park, is famous for its grape-well cold rice cakes.

Should I take the cable car at the Shunan Bamboo Sea?

For the view, yes. The cable car runs 2,742 m with a 350 m rise from the valley up to the Guanyun viewing tower, and it is among the longest in China — the aerial look over the bamboo is the one angle you cannot get on foot. Fares are one-way or return, and on holidays the queues are long, so go early. If you would rather keep both feet on the ground, the Jade Corridor and the lakes are still the heart of the park.

Is the Shunan Bamboo Sea easy to get around?

Not on foot — the park is large, the sights are spread across a wide area and public transport inside is limited, so the honest advice is to self-drive or charter a car and driver for about ¥200–250 a day. That way the cable car, the museum, the caves and the lakes all fit into two days. Wear comfortable shoes, since even the 'easy' sights involve steps and slopes.
