The harbour city and seafront
Haigang district is the real Qinhuangdao: a working port, a long city beach and a promenade where locals walk in the evening. It is not a resort, and that is what makes it worth a morning.
Qinhuangdao · Hebei
Qinhuangdao is Hebei's Bohai port city — a working harbour, 126 km of coast, and the districts of Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan, plus the Golden Coast and Jieshi Mountain.
The short version
The place itself
Qinhuangdao is a port city that happens to contain two of northern China's best-known destinations. Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan are both districts of it, and the city proper — the harbour district of Haigang — sits between them, a working port and university town with its own seafront and its own, more everyday rhythm.
The coastline runs 126 km east to west, from the rocky Shanhaiguan shore to the wide sands of the Changli Golden Coast, taking in the resort beaches, the dunes of Jade Island and the vineyards of Changli in between. It is the sort of coast where a port, a beach holiday and a wine region sit within an hour of each other.
The city's other identity is older. Qinhuangdao takes its name from Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor, who came to this coast on his eastern tours looking for the elixir of life — the same search commemorated at the Qin Seeking Immortality site. Jieshi Mountain to the west is the one Cao Cao climbed to write 'the sea at Jieshi'. History here is 2,200 years deep, and the city has kept its name the whole time.

On the coast east of the city, where Qin Shi Huang is said to have sent his envoys to sea in search of eternal life. The cliffs and the sea views are the draw; the legend gives it weight.
The mountain west of the city that Cao Cao climbed in 207 AD to write his famous frontier poem 'Viewing the Sea'. A half-day climb with temples and the poem carved in stone.
64.9 km of soft yellow sand south-west of the city, including the sand-sledding slopes and the dune-and-sea landscape of Jade Island — the 'Kiss of Desert and Sea'.
A dune peninsula where tall sand hills meet the sea and the woods, with a huge share of China's bird species passing through. Sandboarding, swimming and beach camping in one place.
A working showcase farm on the Beidaihe edge of the city — giant pumpkins, a coconut-and-palm greenhouse of southern plants, and pick-your-own plots. Good with children.
Qinhuangdao has four railway stations covering its different corners — Qinhuangdao station for trains to Beijing and Tianjin, Shanhaiguan for the northeast, Beidaihe for the resort, and Changli for the south coast. High-speed rail from Beijing is about 2 to 3 hours depending on the station.
Qinhuangdao Beidaihe Airport (BPE) sits between the harbour district and Shanhaiguan, with domestic service and a connecting bus into the city. The districts are 17–30 km apart along the coast road, so it makes sense to pick one base and treat the others as day trips.

Two days is enough to see the city and one stretch of coast: the harbour and seafront on one, the Golden Coast or Jieshi Mountain on the other. Three days, based in Haigang or Beidaihe, lets you add the Changli wine country, Jade Island and a full day around Shanhaiguan without rushing. Most visitors give the city itself a morning and spend the rest on the coast.
Plan these days properly
Beijing
Beijing Municipality · 6 tours
Beijing is China's capital and the most efficient place to start a first trip: the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven and the hutong
Beidaihe
Hebei · 4 tours
Beidaihe is Hebei's classic seaside resort on the Bohai coast, roughly 380 km from Beijing and about 2 hours by high-speed train, and it earns its fam
Shanhaiguan
Hebei · 4 tours
Shanhaiguan is the Great Wall town where the Ming dynasty's eastern defence line met the sea, about 300 km east of Beijing and 17 km from Qinhuangdao
They are one municipality. Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan are both districts of Qinhuangdao, 17–30 km apart along the coast, and the city proper (Haigang district) sits between them. So a 'Qinhuangdao trip' usually means all three.
More than people expect: the working harbour and its seafront promenade, the Qin Seeking Immortality site east of the city, and Yanshan University in the university district. West of town, Jieshi Mountain is the 'Jieshi' of Cao Cao's famous poem.
By high-speed rail to one of four stations — Qinhuangdao (Beijing and Tianjin), Shanhaiguan (northeast), Beidaihe (the resort) or Changli (south coast) — or by air into Qinhuangdao Beidaihe Airport (BPE). From Beijing the train is about 2 to 3 hours.
A 64.9 km stretch of yellow-sand coast south-west of the city, in Changli county, including the sand-sledding slopes and the dune peninsula of Jade Island. It is a separate, more active coast from Beidaihe, popular for sandboarding and camping.
June to August if you want to swim and use the beaches, with July and August the warmest water. May and September are cooler and quieter for sightseeing, and April is good for the bird migration through the coastal wetlands.
