Hong Kong Shopping Tours 2026 | Harbour City, Causeway Bay, Outlets & Sale Seasons | JoyoTour

Shopping in Hong Kong SAR, China means a duty-free free port, prices about 30% below the mainland, two citywide sale seasons and everything from Harbour City to the Ladies' Market.

The short version

Hong Kong is a duty-free free port, which is why shopping in Hong Kong SAR, China runs roughly 20–30% below mainland prices on international brands — and 3 days is the classic shopping trip. There are two citywide sale seasons, late July through August and the Christmas-to-New-Year stretch, when mid-range brands drop to 50–70% off and mass-market labels to 30% of list. The circuit is compact: Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui, SOGO and Times Square in Causeway Bay, The Landmark in Central and the Citygate outlets by the airport are all within 30 minutes of each other.

What Hong Kong Shopping is actually like

Hong Kong's reputation as a shopping city rests on one structural fact: it is a free port. Almost nothing imported is taxed, and there is no sales tax, no goods tax, no VAT. The price tag starts life lower than the same tag across the boundary, and that is before the two sale seasons knock a further third or half off it.

The shopping is also compressed into a remarkably small area. Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui — the largest mall in Hong Kong, with the world's second-largest Louis Vuitton store — is a short ferry or MTR ride from Causeway Bay, the second-most-expensive retail strip on earth after Fifth Avenue. Central's Landmark and IFC are ten minutes further. Between them sit the street markets: the Ladies' Market on Tung Choi Street, Sneakers Street on Fa Yuen Street, and the cosmetics pharmacies of Granville Road.

Then there are the outlets. Citygate in Tung Chung is the one everyone knows — 80-plus brands at a standing 30–70% off, ten minutes from the airport — but the locals' secret is the Horizon Plaza building in Ap Lei Chau, 28 floors of warehouse sales including the Joyce and Lane Crawford outlets, where designer pieces go for 30% of their original price.

Practicalities matter here. Malls open at 10:00 but independent shops open at noon, so mornings are for sleeping or sightseeing. UnionPay works everywhere and beats carrying cash, except at the famous holdouts — the Lung Cheong dispensary and the Jenny Bakery cookie queues take HK$ cash only. And at the markets, the first price is never the price.

What not to miss — Hong Kong Shopping

01

Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui

The largest shopping centre in Hong Kong, four linked zones along Canton Road with the world's second-largest LV flagship and dozens of international houses. Big enough to fill a day; most shops 10:00–22:00.

02

Causeway Bay

The second-most-expensive retail rents in the world buy you density: SOGO department store (anniversary sales in May and November), Times Square with its giant outdoor screen, and Hysan Place with the Apple store and the three-floor Eslite bookshop.

03

Central: The Landmark and IFC

The Landmark is the luxury anchor — Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, Fendi, Harvey Nichols — and closes at 19:30, earlier than anywhere else. IFC Mall holds 200-plus international brands and the harbour-facing Apple store.

04

Citygate Outlets, Tung Chung

Hong Kong's dedicated outlet mall: more than 80 brands at a standing 30–70% off, mostly mid-range labels plus Burberry and Bally at the top. Ten minutes from the airport — go on arrival or before you fly out.

05

Horizon Plaza, Ap Lei Chau

Twenty-eight warehouse floors the tour buses miss: Joyce Warehouse on 21 (Yohji, Comme des Garçons, Armani from 30% of price), Lane Crawford's only outlet on 25, Space Warehouse for Gucci and Prada, Max Mara on 27.

06

The street markets

The Ladies' Market on Tung Choi Street (noon to 23:00), Sneakers Street on Fa Yuen Street with 40-plus sports shops in 150 m, and Granville Road's cosmetics strip — home of the one-and-only Lung Cheong Dispensary, cash only.

Getting there and away

Fly into Hong Kong International (HKG) and you are ten minutes from the first outlet mall: bus S1 or S56 runs from the airport to Citygate in Tung Chung, which sits on top of the Tung Chung MTR station. The Airport Express reaches Kowloon station (HK$90, for Elements mall) in about 21 minutes and Hong Kong station (HK$100, under IFC Mall) in about 24.

Every major shopping district sits on the MTR: Tsim Sha Tsui station for Harbour City, DFS and Granville Road; Causeway Bay for SOGO, Times Square and Hysan Place; Central and Admiralty for The Landmark, IFC and Pacific Place; Mong Kok for Langham Place, the Ladies' Market and Sneakers Street. Many malls connect directly to the station exits. An Octopus card (HK$150) covers all of it.

How many days do you need?

Three days is the classic shopping trip and the source guide's own number: one day for Tsim Sha Tsui (Harbour City, DFS, Granville Road and 1881 Heritage), one for Causeway Bay and Central, and one for the outlets — Citygate in the morning, Horizon Plaza after lunch, Ladies' Market at night. If you come for the Christmas–New Year sale season, add a buffer day: the best pieces go early, and the crowds build towards the holiday.

Plan these days properly

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for shopping in Hong Kong?

The winter sale season, December to February, peaking at Christmas and the run-up to Chinese New Year — that is when the citywide markdowns reach their deepest. The second citywide season runs late July through August. Between them, SOGO's May and November anniversary sales are the best single-store events. Arrive early in the season: the good stock goes first.

Why is shopping cheaper in Hong Kong?

Because it is a free port. Hong Kong charges no import tariffs on most goods and has no sales tax, goods tax or VAT, so international brands price about 20–30% below the mainland before any discount. In sale season, mid-range brands go to 50–70% off and mass-market labels from 30% of list.

What time do Hong Kong shops open?

Later than you think. Shopping malls open at 10:00, but the independent shops inside them and the street shops in Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok often open at noon. Do not shop in the morning — sightsee early, shop after lunch, and note that The Landmark in Central closes at 19:30 while apm in Kwun Tong trades to midnight.

Can I pay by UnionPay in Hong Kong?

Yes, and you should wherever possible: almost all malls and chains take UnionPay with no surcharge, and the exchange rate beats street money-changers. Ask for the UnionPay channel rather than Visa or Mastercard. Cash is still needed for street markets, the Lung Cheong Dispensary on Granville Road and the Jenny Bakery cookie shops — all HK$-cash only.

Do I need to visit all the big malls?

No. The big malls overlap heavily in brands and discounts, so one or two is enough — Harbour City plus Causeway Bay covers almost everything. Spend the rest of your time on what the malls cannot do: the outlets at Tung Chung and Ap Lei Chau, and the street markets of Mong Kok.

Do Hong Kong shop assistants speak Mandarin?

Yes. After years of mainland visitors, Mandarin is standard in malls, chain stores and even market stalls, and many vendors can haggle in English too. At the street markets a few Cantonese words help — 'gei chin' for how much, 'pin di la' for a bit cheaper — but you will manage fine without.
