Daocheng Yading Tours & Travel Packages 2026 | Three Sacred Peaks, Sichuan | JoyoTour

Plan a private Daocheng Yading tour in Sichuan: three sacred peaks at 6,000 m, the trails to Milk and Five-Colour lakes, and 4,000 m altitude done right.

The short version

Daocheng Yading is a nature reserve in western Sichuan built around three sacred snow peaks — Xiannairi at 6,032 m and Yangmaiyong and Xianuoduoji at 5,958 m each — with the reserve floor at about 4,000 m. Two days cover it: one for the short trail to Pearl Lake, one for the long climb to Milk Lake and Five-Colour Lake. Access is about 3 hours by road from Daocheng town, or two full days by bus from Chengdu.

The place itself

What Daocheng Yading is actually like

Daocheng Yading sits in the far south-west of Sichuan, in the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture on the south-eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and it is the landscape the phrase 'the last Shangri-La' was coined for. Three snow peaks stand in a rough triangle inside the reserve: Xiannairi, the north peak, at 6,032 m; and to the south and east, Yangmaiyong and Xianuoduoji, both at 5,958 m. Tibetan tradition names them the three bodhisattvas — Avalokitesvara, Manjushri and Vajrapani.

The reserve is arranged like a staircase up a valley, and most people walk it over two days. The short line climbs gently from the Chonggu Temple lawn to Pearl Lake, a green, still pool directly below Xiannairi — half a day at most, and the easiest real taste of the scenery. The long line is the famous one: an electric cart to the Luorong pasture, then a hard 5–6 hour walk (or a 4-hour horse ride) up to Milk Lake, a small glacial tarn under Yangmaiyong, and on to Five-Colour Lake at 4,600 m, where the water shifts through five colours in the light.

The altitude is the other half of the trip, and it is not a detail. The reserve floor is around 4,000 m and the big lakes sit higher still, so the sensible approach is to arrive at Daocheng town (3,740 m), sleep there, and only then drive the 3 hours in to Yading village. The town's own surroundings — the poplars and fields along the Bang River, the red grassland at Sangdui in early October, the monasteries on the way in — are worth a slow day of their own.

This is not a comfortable destination and it does not pretend to be. Food inside the reserve barely exists, beds in Yading village are simple, and the weather changes by the hour. What you get for the effort is one of the last genuinely wild high places in China, and the three peaks standing over it.

What not to miss — Daocheng Yading

01

Xiannairi, the north peak

At 6,032 m the highest and most benevolent of the three, its summit snow-covered all year and its ridgeline shaped, to Tibetan eyes, like a reclining Buddha. It is the peak you see best from Pearl Lake and the Chonggu Temple lawn.

02

The long trail to Milk Lake and Five-Colour Lake

The reserve's headline walk: from the Luorong pasture up to Milk Lake (4,500 m) and on to Five-Colour Lake (4,600 m), where the surface refracts into five distinct colours. Allow 5–6 hours on foot, or 4 hours on horseback to Milk Lake — horses cannot go on to Five-Colour Lake.

03

The short trail to Pearl Lake

Zhuomala Lake, as locals call it, is a small emerald pool at 4,100 m at the foot of Xiannairi, reached on foot from the Chonggu Temple lawn. It is the gentlest real walk in the reserve and the perfect first afternoon if you are still adjusting to the altitude.

04

The Luorong pasture

A broad, marshy meadow at 4,200 m with the Gongga River running through it, and the best single viewpoint for both Yangmaiyong and Xianuoduoji. The electric cart from the Chonggu Temple lawn covers the 7 km in comfort.

05

Chonggu Temple and the Chonggu lawn

A small working monastery at 3,880 m at the foot of Xiannairi, and the junction where the short and long trails divide. The lawn beside it sees Xiannairi in the morning and Xianuoduoji flushed red at sunset — photographers time the two separately.

06

Daocheng town and its monasteries

Beyond the reserve, Daocheng county holds the Bang River poplars, the Sangdui red grassland (visible for only about ten days in early October), the 1,145 lakes of Haizishan, and old monasteries such as Gongga Langjiling and Bengpu on the road in.

Getting there and away

By air, Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY) sits at 4,411 m on the Haizishan plateau, 50 km north of town and the highest civilian airport in the world — which is exactly why arriving here is the riskiest way in. The alternative is Kangding (KGT) at 4,290 m, 38 km from Kangding town, from where buses run the 430-plus km to Daocheng in about 15 hours. Either way, plan a rest day on arrival.

By road from Chengdu, the long-distance bus leaves Xinnanmen station at 10:00 and takes two days, about 22 hours of driving in total: day one runs roughly 8 hours to Kangding, where you sleep at your own cost, and day two leaves Kangding at about 6:00 and reaches Daocheng by late afternoon (about ¥237, bookable two days ahead). From Kangding the daily 6:00 bus is about ¥129. Winter snow occasionally suspends the whole Chengdu service, so confirm before you travel. One-way travel from Daocheng bus station links Chengdu, Ya'an, Kangding and, importantly, Shangri-La in Yunnan — the second classic way into the region. Inside the county, there is no public bus to Yading: you go by shared car (about ¥50) or chartered vehicle, which your guesthouse will usually arrange.

How many days do you need?

Three days is the honest minimum and four is better. Day one: arrive at Daocheng town (3,740 m), rest and let your body catch up, taking in the Bang River in the late afternoon. Day two: drive the 3 hours to Yading village, check in, and walk the short trail to Chonggu Temple and Pearl Lake. Day three: the long trail — electric cart to the Luorong pasture, then up to Milk Lake and Five-Colour Lake — which is the whole reason most people come. A fourth day lets you do the long trail without racing the light and still see the town's monasteries and the Sangdui grassland on the way out. Trying to do it in two days means walking the long trail on the day you arrive, which is how altitude sickness ruins a trip.

Plan these days properly

Frequently asked questions

Will I get altitude sickness at Daocheng Yading?

Many people feel something. Daocheng town is at 3,740 m and the reserve tops out around 4,600 m, so a headache, poor sleep or breathlessness on the first night is common. Take the first day slowly, drink water, eat lightly, avoid alcohol and do not rush the slopes. Bring Rhodiola or a similar remedy started a day or two ahead, and keep a small oxygen can as insurance — but try not to lean on oxygen from the start, because dependence sets in fast.

How do I get to Daocheng Yading from Chengdu?

Two ways. The bus from Chengdu Xinnanmen station leaves at 10:00 and takes two days, about ¥237, with a night in Kangding on the way. The faster way is to fly into Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY), 50 km from town — but at 4,411 m it is the world's highest civilian airport, so flying in gives your body no time to adjust. Many people fly one way and bus the other.

What is the difference between the short and long trail at Yading?

The short trail runs from the Chonggu Temple lawn up to Pearl Lake at 4,100 m — gentle, half a day, and the easiest way to see Xiannairi. The long trail goes from the Luorong pasture up to Milk Lake at 4,500 m and then Five-Colour Lake at 4,600 m; on foot it is 5–6 hours, on horseback about 4 hours to Milk Lake only, because horses cannot continue to Five-Colour Lake. The long trail is the famous one and needs a full, early start.

When is the best time to visit Daocheng Yading?

May to October, with late September and October the classic window: the autumn colour turns the poplars and larches gold and the skies are clearest. April to May brings wildflowers lower down but more snow on the peaks. July and August are the rainy season, when the roads in can be hit by mudslides and landslides. December to March is winter — icy roads and closed water and power make it a bad bet.

Is Daocheng Yading worth such a long journey?

If you want high mountain scenery and can handle the altitude, yes — it is one of the great last-wild places in China, and the three peaks over the lakes are genuinely unforgettable. If you are short on time or unsure about altitude, it is a lot of hard travel for two days of walking, and the honest advice is to give it three or four days rather than squeeze it. Read the altitude question carefully before you decide.

What should I pack for Daocheng Yading?

Layers, waterproof boots and sun protection. It is cold and the weather turns fast — a thick outer layer, hat, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen and a rain shell, plus a trekking pole for the long trail. Bring food: there is almost nothing to buy inside the reserve, and prices in Yading village are high. Carry your own altitude medicine, and take cash — card and mobile payment are unreliable up here.
