Gulangyu Island Tours 2026 | Private Tours & Tickets, Xiamen | JoyoTour

Gulangyu is Xiamen's car-free colonial island of villas, China's only piano museum and carless lanes. Private tours with the ferry booked, from US$129 a day.

The short version

Gulangyu is a 1.87 km² car-free island twenty minutes by ferry off Xiamen, and the single most-visited sight in Fujian — colonial villas, China's only piano museum and a maze of carless lanes, all walkable in a day. The ferry is capped and must be booked ahead with your passport; stay one night and the island empties out into the quiet that made it famous. Xiamen, its gateway, is 20 minutes away by boat.

The place itself

What Gulangyu is actually like

Gulangyu is small enough to walk across in half an hour and dense enough to fill two days. It is a 1.87 km² island just off the southwest of Xiamen, and for a century it was a foreign concession — thirteen countries kept consulates here, and the merchants and missionaries who followed left behind a whole townscape of villas, churches and gardens that survives more or less intact.

What makes Gulangyu unlike any other famous Chinese sight is the quiet at its edges. There is not a single car; the only wheels belong to a few electric shuttle buses. Step off the main shopping street of Longtou Road and you are in lanes of crumbling walls, banyan roots and bougainvillea where the loudest thing is someone practising the piano behind a shut window.

It is also China's self-styled island of music — Gulangyu has produced a remarkable number of concert pianists, owns more pianos per household than anywhere in the country, and is the only place with its own piano museum and organ museum. And it is a cat island: cats sleep in the shops and the alley mouths, and the whole place has adopted them as a mascot.

The catch is the crowds. Gulangyu is a capped 5A scenic area and, midday, the lanes fill with day-trippers funnelled off the ferries. The island is at its best in the early morning and after the last ferries leave — which is the whole argument for sleeping over rather than visiting from Xiamen and back.

What not to miss — Gulangyu

01

The international architecture

Colonial villas in every European style, from Greek columns to Islamic domes, built by consuls and returned overseas-Chinese merchants from the 1840s on. The lanes off Longtou Road hold the best of them — Bagua Lou, the Gold Melon Building, the Lin Yutang house.

02

Sunlight Rock (Riguang Yan)

The island's highest point, and the one view that shows you the whole shape of Gulangyu and, on a clear day, the coast of Kinmen. Go at opening; the summit path is narrow and queues form fast.

03

Shuzhuang Garden and the Piano Museum

A merchant's seaside garden built to hide the sea and then reveal it, with China's only piano museum in its 'Listening to the Waves' pavilion — some forty antique pianos, including a gilded one and the world's earliest square grand.

04

The Organ Museum at Bagua Lou

The red-domed octagon villa that is the island's landmark, filled with a collection of giant pipe organs. Climb to the dome for another of Gulangyu's best panoramas.

05

Haoyue Garden and Yu Garden

A Zheng Chenggong memorial park with a colossal stone statue of the Ming loyalist facing the sea, and the quiet grave-and-garden of Lin Qiaozhi, China's pioneering obstetrician.

06

Cat-and-coffee island life

Gulangyu's real pleasure is undirected: a fresh-fruit juice on Longtou Road, a cat on a shop counter, a coffee in a courtyard villa, and no schedule at all. Bring an umbrella and get lost on purpose.

Getting there and away

You reach Gulangyu only by ferry, and only from Xiamen. Book through the official Xiamen Ferry service online with your passport, in your own name — the island caps daily arrivals, so in peak season tickets sell out days ahead and there is no walk-up option. Day crossings leave from the Xiagu Pier at the International Cruise Centre on the Xiamen side; after about 5:30pm the service moves to the downtown Lundu Pier for the night crossing. The ride is about 20 minutes.

On the island, there are no cars, motorbikes or bicycles allowed except for service vehicles. You walk — it is small, flat-ish and signposted — or you take the electric shuttle that loops the whole 6 km island for about ¥50 a day, hop-on hop-off. Bring small luggage, because you will carry it up the lanes yourself.

How many days do you need?

A single day covers the main sights; an overnight is what makes the island worth the trip. With one night you get the early morning and the late evening, when the day-trippers are gone and Gulangyu returns to being the quiet, slightly melancholy place the postcards promise. Two nights lets you slow down properly, skip the combo ticket and just wander.

Plan these days properly

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Gulangyu and do I need to book the ferry?

By ferry from Xiamen only, and yes — you book it in your own name with a passport through the official Xiamen Ferry channels, because the island caps daily visitors. Day boats leave from the Xiagu Pier at the International Cruise Centre; from about 5:30pm the crossing switches to the downtown Lundu Pier. Book days ahead in peak season.

Is Gulangyu worth it, given the crowds?

Yes — if you time it right. Midday it is a crush of tour groups; early morning and after the last ferries it is one of the most atmospheric places in China. The fix is simple: stay a night on the island, or arrive at opening and leave late.

How much does Gulangyu cost?

The ferry is around ¥35–50 return and the combo ticket about ¥100, covering the main sights — Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden and the piano museum, the organ museum, Haoyue Garden and more. Individual sights run ¥30–60. Food and guesthouse prices on the island are higher than Xiamen's.

Can I do Gulangyu as a day trip from Xiamen?

You can, and many people do — it is a 20-minute crossing and a full day is enough for the highlights. But the island is at its best when the day-trippers leave, so an overnight is worth rearranging your trip for. If you only have a day, arrive on the first ferry and leave on the last.

What is there to eat on Gulangyu?

Street food along Longtou Road: peanut-and-sesame mochi, shark-ball fish soup, pineapple cakes and coconut pies, fresh-squeezed juice and the local 'turtle jelly'. Beyond snacks, most locals rate the island's home-cooking and seafood houses over its tourist cafés. Eat off Longtou Road where you can.

Can you drive or cycle on Gulangyu?

No. The island is car-free and bicycle-free, with the exception of a few service vehicles. You walk everywhere, or use the electric shuttle that loops the island. That is exactly why it feels the way it does — leave the wheels on the Xiamen side.

When is the best time to visit Gulangyu?

March to May and October to November, the same as Xiamen. Avoid the National Day and Spring Festival holidays if you can, when the capped ferry sells out and the lanes are at their fullest. Summer is hot and typhoon-prone; winter is mild and much calmer.
