Qinghai Lake · Qinghai
Qinghai Lake is China's largest saltwater lake at 4,489 sq km and 3,200 m altitude — 2 days by car or 4 days by bike cover the 360 km ring road, rapeseed fields and bird islands.
The short version
The place itself
Qinghai Lake does not announce itself. You drive west from Xining through the日月 mountain pass, past the strange westward-flowing Daotang River, and then the plateau simply opens and there it is — a band of deep blue laid flat against the horizon, so wide it reads as sea, not lake. At 4,489 sq km it is roughly six times the size of Singapore, and at 3,200 m it is the highest lake of its scale in China.
The water changes colour through the day: navy at noon under a hard high-altitude sun, silver in the late afternoon, and a strange luminous teal in the twenty minutes before dawn when the whole eastern sky lights up behind it. The shore is ringed by grassland, rapeseed fields in July, sand dunes in the northeast, and four mountain ranges that keep the lake cupped in a basin.
This is Tibetan Buddhist holy ground. Pilgrims still walk or prostrate their way clockwise around the entire 360 km shoreline, and you will pass them on the highway — a reminder that for many people this is not scenery but a destination of the soul. Go clockwise out of respect, and take your time.
Pins are plotted from real latitude and longitude on a 5° graticule. This is a schematic orientation diagram, not a political map — no boundaries are drawn.

Over a million mu of yellow flowers ring the lake through July, brightest around 11–15 July. The blue water and yellow fields together are the single most photographed image of Qinghai.
Over 100,000 migratory birds nest here from May to July, dense enough to darken the sky. Entry is 115 CNY in high season, 78 CNY from 20 October to 15 April — but outside breeding season there is little to see.
The tourist centre on the south shore, 151 km from Xining, on the site of China's first torpedo testing base. Entry is 100 CNY high season, 50 CNY low, and there are cheaper unofficial paths to the water nearby.
Northeast shore dunes that slide straight into the lake — desert, water, grassland and snow peaks in one frame. Entry 90 CNY high season; the international sand sculpture festival runs here each July.
The secret 1958 research town at Xihai where China's first atomic and hydrogen bombs were built. The memorial hall displays the Dongfeng-2 missile; a 90 CNY combined ticket covers the whole site.
Fly or train into Xining first — it is the gateway. Xining Caojiabao Airport (XNN) has daily flights to Beijing and Xi'an, with less frequent services to Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Golmud, Guangzhou, Kunming, Shenzhen and Urumqi; check schedules before booking. The airport shuttle is 21 CNY to the CAAC ticket office at 34 Bayi West Road, taking about 30 minutes, or 80 CNY by taxi. Xining is also where the Lanzhou–Qinghai and Qinghai–Tibet railways meet, with direct trains to Lhasa, Golmud, Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and Qingdao. Long-distance buses leave from Xining Bus Station at 1 Jianguo Road (0971-7112094) and Xinning Road Bus Station (0971-6155795).
Around the lake, a chartered car is the comfortable option: about 600 CNY for a one-day loop from Xining, 1,000 CNY for two days, shared between roughly four people. Agree in advance on which sights you will stop at, how long you will stay, and whether meals and lodging for the driver are included. Public buses are cheaper but limited — the Xining–Bird Island bus leaves 07:45 daily and arrives 14:30 for 48 CNY, returning 15:00; buses to Chaka and Wulan pass Erlangjian; and there is no direct bus to Heimahe, so you ride the Wulan or Chaka service and get off, then flag a passing vehicle on G109 for the return. Cyclists should rent in Xihai Town rather than Xining, where the ride out is long and dull; Xihai has four or five shops (Luoli, Shenghu and Qibingying are the better ones) charging 50–100 CNY a day with panniers, helmet and tools included. Book ahead in June–August. Note the loop's high point is the Sun-Moon Mountain pass on G109 at 3,520 m.

Two days by car is the honest minimum: day one from Xining over Sun-Moon Mountain and the Daotang River to Erlangjian and Heimahe for the night, day two for sunrise, Bird Island and the atomic town before returning. Cyclists need four days for the full 360 km, or five if you want it easy. One extra day buys you Chaka Salt Lake (about 152 km beyond Erlangjian, three hours each way) or a side trip to Ta'er Monastery, one of the great Tibetan Buddhist monasteries of the northwest, 80 CNY entry, open 08:00–17:00.

July and August, when the rapeseed flowers are in full bloom and the annual Qinghai Lake cycling race runs. April and May are best for birds at Bird Island, when the grassland is still brown; November to February brings whooper swans but freezing temperatures that can drop below minus 30°C. Avoid February to April, when gales and sandstorms are common.
Most visitors feel nothing at 3,200 m. Mild symptoms — headache, dizziness, poor sleep — usually fade within one to two days as your body adjusts. Avoid alcohol and smoking before you go, take a day to acclimatise in Xining, drink plenty of water, and do not run or jump at the higher passes. If you have a cold, do not go up — it can develop into pulmonary oedema.
Yes, in mid-to-late July, which is peak season. Rooms around the lake are scarce and prices jump well above the low season. Standards are basic everywhere outside Xining — most lakeside hotels have shared bathrooms, and tent guesthouses offer beds and hot water but no showers. Bring your own toiletries.
Yes. The ring road is smooth asphalt with gentle gradients, and it does not demand high fitness or technical skill. Most reasonably healthy people with a habit of exercise can manage it over four days. If you only want the scenery, ride the best stretch — Heimahe to Bird Island, about 70 km along the West Ring Road — and take a bus for the rest. Buses will carry a bicycle for an extra fee.
No. It is a holy lake to Tibetan Buddhists, swimming is forbidden, and the salt content is high enough to cause skin irritation. The water temperature is also dangerously cold year-round.
The naked carp (huangyu) is unique to Qinghai Lake, and overfishing has cut its population to less than a tenth of its original level. Fishing and sale are banned by the provincial government, and restaurants have signed agreements not to serve it. If anyone offers you one by the shore, it is illegal — refuse it.
