Mount Hua Private Day Tour

The western peak by cable car, the ridge walk to the south peak, and the plank walk if you want it — China's most vertical sacred mountain in a day.

The short version

Mount Hua, one of China's five sacred Taoist mountains, rises to 2,154 m about 120 km east of Xi'an in Shaanxi. Two cable cars make a day trip possible: up the west peak, along the ridge to the 2,154 m south peak, and down by shuttle. It is a long day — about 12 hours — and a lot of stair, but it is the most dramatic thing reachable from Xi'an.

  • Two cable cars make the 2,154 m south peak doable in a day.
  • Twelve hours door to door, including 30 minutes of rail each way.
  • The plank walk is genuinely exposed and optional — harness included.
  • Go on a weekday; weekend queues at the cable car can run two hours.

What not to miss

  1. 06:40

    Hotel pickup

Transfer to Xi'an North for the first high-speed train. This is the one departure we will not move.

  2. 07:30

    Train to Hua Shan North

About 30 minutes, then a shuttle bus to the west peak cable car station at the foot of the mountain.

  3. 09:00

    West peak cable car

A 20-minute ride up 2,000 metres of granite, with the cliff face directly below the cabin. This is the dramatic one.

  4. 10:00

Ridge walk to the south peak

Two to three hours along the ridge: the west peak temple, the saddle, and up to the south peak at 2,154 m, the highest point on the mountain.

  5. 13:00

    The plank walk

Optional and genuinely exposed — a 30-metre boardwalk bolted to a vertical cliff, with a harness clipped to a cable. Your guide carries the harness.

  6. 17:00

    Down and back

Shuttle bus to the station, train to Xi'an North, and a transfer to your hotel around 19:00.

Pickup, timing and getting around

Pickup at 06:40 from hotels inside the city wall and in Yanta. The train is booked in advance against your passport, so this timing is fixed — if you are late, the day does not work.

Wear shoes with grip and bring a layer: it is around 10°C cooler on the summit than in Xi'an, and the wind on the ridge is constant. Gloves help on the chain sections.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is Mount Hua?

It is a serious day. With the cable car you still climb and descend several hundred steps on steep granite, and the ridge walk is 2 to 3 hours. You do not need to be a climber, but you do need to be steady on your feet.

Is the plank walk safe?

It is bolted to the cliff and you wear a harness clipped to a steel cable the whole way. It is safe and it is genuinely frightening. Roughly half our guests do it; the other half wait on the terrace, which has the same view.

What if the cable cars close for wind?

They do, several times a year. If the west peak cable car is shut on the day, we take the north peak cable car and the classic old route instead, which is longer but still reaches the south peak. If the mountain closes entirely we refund in full.

Why so early?

The first train gets you on the first cable car, which is the difference between a two-hour queue and no queue at all. Leave at 09:00 and you will spend the morning in a line.
