Temple, Mansion, Cemetery
Be at the south gate for the 08:00 bell and the gate ceremony, then go straight into the Confucius Temple while it is still quiet. Two hours: the dragon columns, the Thirteen Stele Pavilions, the Hall of Great Achievement, and look up for the interlocking eaves.
Exit west 50 metres into the Confucius Mansion — one hour through the offices at the front and the family quarters behind. Lunch either at the hotel restaurant next door for a proper Kong banquet or on Wumaci Street for the cheap local version.
Afternoon: walk north to Yan Temple, then the Cemetery. Do not take the ¥10 buggy without thinking — Confucius's own grave is only about ten minutes on foot.
